India's Sharath Makanahalli's bronze medal in the men's 1500m T12 event at the Asian Para Games was upgraded to silver on Wednesday after Uzbekistan's Fakhriddin Khamraev was disqualified for a rule violation.
Khamraev had initially won gold in 4 minutes 7.48 seconds, with Jordan's Nabeel Maqableh finishing second in 4:07.97 and Makanahalli taking bronze in 4:11.01.
However, following a protest by Maqableh, Khamraev was disqualified under Rule TR 18.1 (b) of World Para Athletics, which provides for the disqualification of athletes who jostle or obstruct competitors to gain an unfair advantage.
Maqableh was subsequently awarded the gold medal, while Makanahalli moved up to silver.
India's para athletics chief coach Satyanarayana told PTI that Khamraev was disqualified for overtaking the Jordanian athlete from the left instead of the right during the final 200 metres of the race.
The T12 classification is for athletes with visual impairment who have limited vision. Athletes in this category may compete with or without a guide runner, depending on the event and their choice.
