Playoff to decide Serie A title if 2 teams finish level

The Serie A title will be decided by a play-off if two teams are locked on points at the top of the table from next season, Italy's Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, the FIGC said that it had approved regulations for the title decider, which will go straight to penalties should the two teams finish the match level.

This system has been in place in the past in Serie A but has only been used once, in 1964 when Bologna beat Inter Milan in Rome to claim the last of their seven league crowns.

FIGC chief Gabriele Gravina has in the past said that he would like every league title to be decided by play-offs.

Last season AC Milan were crowned champions after finishing two points ahead of local rivals Inter Milan.

Motta leaves Spezia

Thiago Motta has left Spezia after the Serie A club announced on Tuesday the termination of the former Italy midfielder's contract.

"Spezia Calcio announces that an agreement has been reached regarding the terms of the consensual termination of the contracts of coach Thiago Motta and his technical staff," Spezia said in a statement.

Motta, who won the Serie A, Champions League and Italian Cup treble as a player with Inter Milan in 2010, led Spezia to Serie A safety last season.

The 39-year-old had a trophy-packed playing career, winning the 2006 Champions League and two La Liga titles with Barcelona, as well as five Ligue 1 crowns and a host of domestic cups at Paris Saint-Germain.

Spezia are expected to announce Luca Gotti as their coach for the coming campaign.

Gotti has been out of work since being sacked by Udinese in December.
