Manchester battle ends in a draw

The Manchester rivals provided a telling demonstration of how heavy spending does not always translate into glory Sunday as United and City managed just a single shot on target each in their 0-0 Premier league draw.

It took until the 82nd minute for Jesus Navas to curl a shot at United goalkeeper David De Gea at Old Trafford. And Joe Hart only made his first save six minutes later when the City goalkeeper stretched to tip Chris Smalling's shot wide.

In the 170th derby, there was a lack of quality and intensity from the neighbors, whose squads are estimated to have cost a total in excess of $1.2 billion to assemble.

City still returned to top spot, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference, with United two points back in fourth.

Kane scores hat-trick

Harry Kane scored a hat trick to propel Tottenham to a 5-1 rout of Bournemouth in the Premier league on Sunday.

Hosts Bournemouth took the lead through Matt Ritchie after only 49 seconds, but Tottenham equalized through Kane's first goal from the penalty spot in the ninth minute.

Mousa Dembele put Tottenham ahead eight minutes later and Erik lamela then tapped in Kane's cross for Tottenham's third goal.

Kane converted a cross from Christian Eriksen for his second goal of the game. He completed his hat trick after Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc parried the ball to his feet from Toby Alderweireld's header.

Sunderland’s first win

Sunderland emphatically beat fierce rival Newcastle 3-0 on Sunday for its first Premier league victory of the season.

An Adam Johnson penalty, followed by goals from Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher, lifted Sunderland off the bottom of the league standings into 18th place on six points.

It was also Sunderland's sixth straight league win against Newcastle. Earlier, Fabricio Coloccini was sent off for a fould on Fletecher, which resulted in Johnson scoring the opener from penalty spot.

Villa fires Sherwood

Aston Villa fired manager Tim Sherwood on Sunday after eight months in charge of the Premier league club.

Villa lost 2-1 at home to Swansea on Saturday, a sixth straight defeat in the league, against Bournemouth. The club is in the Premier league relegation zone with only four points from 10 matches.

Sherwood replaced Paul lambert as manager in February. Kevin MacDonald, who has been coaching the under-21s, was placed in temporary charge.
