Country’s top doubles player, leander Paes and his Spanish partner Fernando Verdasco bowed out of US Open in the second round on Friday. Meanwhile on Thursday, Sania Mirza made it to the second round with straight sets win.

Paes and Verdasco lost to American pairing of Steve Johnson and Sam Querry in a match lasting a little over two hours. The Indo-Spanish pair were beaten 5-7, 6-4, 3-6 in a match which was relatively even but for the Americans using their big serve to good use and landing an extra break of serve that tipped the match in their favour.

Johnson and Querrey had earlier knocked out top-seeded compatriots.

In women’s doubles on Thursday, the top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair of Sania and Martina Hingis dispatched the Americans Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. However, the hot favourites lost their service twice in the 56-minute contest in which they broke their rivals seven times.

They now face Swiss Timea Bacsinszky and her Taipei partner Chia-Jung Chuang, who defeated Melanie Oudin and Jessica Pegula 6-4 7-6 (5).
