MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians have elevated former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to the role of head coach for the IPL 2027 season following the departure of Mahela Jayawardene, the franchise announced on Saturday.
Pollard, 39, has been part of the Mumbai Indians setup for years, first as a player and later as the team’s batting coach. His elevation marks another chapter in his long association with the franchise, which he represented as a player from 2009 until his final IPL appearance in 2022.
“MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me,” Pollard said.
Having experienced the franchise as both a player and a coach, Pollard said he understood the responsibility of representing Mumbai Indians and the expectations that come with the team’s legacy.
He also indicated that he would not make sweeping changes to the team’s approach, saying the franchise’s winning mentality and culture were already deeply ingrained in him.
“I don't think much can change. It's more embedded in you, to want to win all the time and to invoke that sort of passion each and every single time,” he said.
Pollard’s appointment comes as Mumbai Indians seek to revive their fortunes after a difficult run in recent IPL seasons. The franchise last won the title in 2020 and has struggled for consistency, alternating between playoff appearances and finishes near the bottom of the points table over the past five editions.
Reflecting on the team’s recent performance, Pollard acknowledged that the 2026 campaign had not gone as expected. He said his immediate priority would be to understand what the team needs before bringing the same energy and competitive spirit to his new role.
One of the most successful franchises in IPL history, Mumbai Indians have won five titles. Pollard’s appointment places a familiar figure at the helm as the team prepares for the 2027 season.
