Fedex confident before Wimbledon

Seventeen-time major champion Roger Federer says he feels fit and confident before the start of Wimbledon where he will be defending his men’s single crown.

The Swiss Sunday won his 77th tour title and sixth crown at the Gerry Weber Open here, his first trophy since Cincinnati in August 2012.

“For me, it is great in terms of confidence. Winning solves everything really. It was good to fight as well in the last couple of matches,” Federer was quoted as saying on atpworldtour.com after his victory over Mikhail Youzhny.

“I’m just very happy how I played this week and excited about what’s to come now. Because I feel confident, I feel fit and fresh and that’s very important at this point in the season.”

Assessing his season so far, the Swiss added: “I am not absolutely satisfied with the first six months. Maybe if I had changed my tournament schedule I would have won more titles but that wasn’t the goal.”

Federer will look to win his eighth Wimbledon title which starts June 24.

Murray not getting carried away with Queen’s success

london: Britain’s Andy Murray does not believe his victory in Sunday’s Aegon Championships final has any bearing on his hopes of securing a maiden Wimbledon title.

Murray’s three-set win over defending champion Marin Cilic means he has now won three of the last five tournaments at Queen’s, and provided him with the perfect return from his recent injury lay-off.

Top seed at Queen’s, Murray had been forced to make the difficult decision to sit out the French Open due to a back injury but now heads to SW19 with yet another Queen’s title in the locker — not to mention the Olympic gold medal and US Open crown he collected last year.

But the world number two was quick to play down the significance of yesterday’s win ahead of his latest tilt at the Wimbledon crown, which a year ago ended with an emotional defeat in the final at the hands of Roger Federer.

“Obviously it helps [to win a title], but I’d say that happens in every single tournament. It’s not different just because it’s Wimbledon,” Murray said after his 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win over the world number 12. “There’s no guarantees at all in sport.”
