England keep series alive

AP

England kept alive the one-day series against Australia by winning the third match by 93 runs at Old Trafford on Tuesday, thanks to a first ODI century by James Taylor and a stunning display of fielding in the reply.

Taylor held up one end in hitting 101 off 114 balls to allow Jason Roy (63) and Eoin Morgan (62) to make rapid contributions as England posted 300-8, its highest total so far this series.

England's catching was superb in Australia's chase, with Steven Finn diving to his right and taking a one-handed catch to dismiss captain Steven Smith. There were more gasps from the crowd when Roy caught Ashton Agar at the second attempt as he fell back.

Recalled opener Aaron Finch top-scored with 53 as the Australians were dismissed for 207, ending their seven-match winning run against England in ODIs. Moeen Ali and liam Plunkett took three wickets each in a tight overall bowling performance.

Brief Scores:

England: 300/8 (Taylor 101, Roy 63) beat Australia: 207 (Finch 53; Ali 3/32, Plunkett 3/60) by 93 runs.

Haddin retires

Sydney: Australian wicketkeeper and batsman Brad Haddin announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday after a stellar career.

The 37-year-old will continue to play only Twenty20 cricket for the Sydney Sixers.

Haddin controversially lost his place on Australia's England tour after performing below his usual standards in the opening game and returned home last month for family reasons.

Haddin played 66 Tests but had to wait until 30 to win his first Test cap following the retirement of Adam Gilchrist.  Haddin joins Shane Watson, Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers who have all retired from internationals recently.
