World champion Germany was held by an experimental England to 0-0 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on Friday as the teams prepare for the World Cup in Russia.

Jesse lingard missed the target in stoppage time at the end of the game as England failed to score at home for the first time since 2013.

Five England players made their debuts and coped despite losing Phil Jones, the most experienced player, 25 minutes into the defender's 24th appearance.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, one of the England newcomers, made key saves from Timo Werner in the first half as Germany's seven-match winning run was halted.

"It was a really tactical game," Ruben loftus-Cheek said after his England debut. "It was good for us young players and I certainly learned a lot."

Germany counterpart Marc-Andre Ter Stegen dived to block a header from Jamie Vardy in the second half in front of more than 81,000 fans in north london.

"There weren't really a lot of chances," Germany coach Joachim loew said through a translator. "We need to learn to switch a little better and that will do us good for the World Cup."

France beat Wales 2-0

Strike partners Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud scored as France began its World Cup warmup program with a comfortable 2-0 home win against Wales in a friendly on Friday.

Both have struggled for their clubs, with Griezmann lacking goals for Atletico Madrid and Giroud hardly managing to get a game for Arsenal.

But in the continued absence of Karim Benzema for France they still work very well in tandem for les Bleus. They have been coach Didier Deschamps' front two since last year's European Championship and are odds-on to continue at the World Cup in Russia next year.

Elsewhere, Mexico's Hirving lozano exposed Belgium's unexpected defensive frailty with two goals and Romelu lukaku needed to score a brace to give the home side a 3-3 draw in a match between two World Cup-bound teams on Friday.

Eden Hazard gave Belgium the early edge, and Guardado equalised in the first half.

It set up a spectacular second half, in which lozano and lukaku flourished.

Belgium play Japan on Tuesday, and Mexico goes to Poland for more friendly action.

Meanwhile, Goncalo Guedes scored one goal and set up another to lead Portugal over Saudi Arabia 3-0 in a friendly on Friday. Cristiano Ronaldo was rested by coach Fernando Santos, as Portugal has qualified for the World Cup.
