In what would be a virtual dead rubber, the mighty Chennai Super Kings will take on struggling Delhi Daredevils here at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium on Friday.
For Chennai, the game would be an opportunity to fine tune their formidable unit. It will be a chance to try new things and get their problem areas fixed.
Delhi, on the other hand, will have nothing but pride to play for on Friday. With just six points from 12 games, Delhi's chances of even moving above the bottom place seem to be difficult job at this point.
Adding former great Ricky Ponting to the side nor changing the captaincy mid-way through the tournament have yielded no positive changes as Daredevils yet again ended up disappointing their fans.
The only positive has been the improvement in the batting department since Shreyas Iyer took over as their skipper.
Rishabh Pant, in particular, has been a revelation, scoring an astonishing 582 runs from 12 games, including an emphatic century against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Iyer has supported him ably, getting 386 runs from 12 matches.
Other than these two, young Prithvi Shaw has done reasonably well in his maiden IPl campaign. However, the rest have been a big disappointment.
Big-hitters like Glenn Maxwell, Colin Munro and Jason Roy have not justified their reputation.
The bowlers have been equally disappointing. With 15 wickets, Trent Boult has been the only shining light as far as the bowlers are concerned. Others have just not delivered consistently.
The remaining two matches this season might give the team management an opportunity to try and test with new players.
Infact in their last match against RCB, IPl debuts were handed to Sandeep lamichhane, Abhishek Sharma and Junior Dala.
Nepal spinner lamichhane opened the bowling and looked impressive. He finished with decent figures of 1/25. Abhishek, who was part of the India U-19 team, had a fine debut after hammering an unbeaten 46 off 19 balls. However, the South African pacer Dala did not live up to his potential and was hugely disappointing.
On the other hand, Chennai have been hugely impressive. Despite their two-year absence from the tournament, Super Kings have been playing like they have never been away from the thick of things.
They have already qualified to the play-offs, sitting second in the league with 16 points. Now, their prime target would be to either secure the top position or atleast consolidate their second place in the standings.
They looked pretty impressive in their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their batsmen had a field day against arguably the best bowling unit.
CSK's opening pair of Ambati Rayudu and Shane Watson has been brilliant, be it batting first or chasing targets. Watson has defied his age with 424 runs at 35.33.
Rayudu, in particular, has been their standout player with 535 runs at an average of 48.63. He smashed an unbeaten 100 against Sunrisers and would be keen to carry on that good run.
Dhoni has proved his haters wrong with his impressive hitting throughout the tournament, scoring 413 runs at 103.25.
Bowling, however, still remains a concern for CSK. Shardul Thakur leads their bowling charts with 11 scalps. He is followed by Dwayne Bravo with nine wickets. The spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja has shown glimpses of their abilities, but has not fulfilled their abilities.
