Liverpool: Arsenal ended their 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield on Sunday, beating Liverpool 1-0 through Kai Havertz's first-half goal to move three points clear at the top of the table.
Havertz struck in the 16th minute, finishing at the far post after Declan Rice sent a low cross across the face of goal. The move began when Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker's attempted short pass from a goal kick was intercepted by Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.
The victory was Arsenal's eighth of the campaign and lifted Mikel Arteta's side above Manchester City. The defending champions are now five points ahead of third-placed Brighton, the only team to have beaten them this season.
Arsenal's defence held firm despite sustained pressure from Liverpool, particularly in the first half. Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free kick, while Alexis Mac Allister headed over from a good position. Liverpool also had several penalty appeals turned down.
The hosts, however, failed to register a shot on target and remain fifth, nine points behind Arsenal. Their defeat ended a run of five consecutive league wins.
The result was a sharp turnaround for Arsenal, who had been knocked out of the English League Cup by fourth-tier Fleetwood Town on penalties just five days earlier. Arteta restored his regular starters for the Anfield contest, and they responded with a crucial win in their title defence.
Rice praised the team's defensive unity, saying the way the players stayed together was unlike anything he had experienced.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai acknowledged that his side still had work to do to reach the top, while Arteta described football as unpredictable.
Havertz's goal also made him the highest-scoring German in Premier League history, taking his tally to 46, one more than former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.
