Stephens' friend triumphs, too
Stephens thought it could have been better. Soccer player Jozy Altidore scored two goals to lead his Toronto FC to a 4-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes in an MlS game. In a postgame interview, Altidore said his mom told him about Stephens' victory. Stephens said she had been checking the score and was happy Altidore had scored twice. But, she added, "he should have got a hat trick. It would have been such a good day." Stephens said she met Altidore, who plays for the US national team, in fifth grade. He came to see her earlier in the tournament while he was suspended from the Americans' game at Honduras because of yellow-card accumulation, then was back in her box for Thursday's semifinal victory over Venus Williams. Things are looking up for the two friends.

Stephens won 6-3, 6-0, and the longtime friends shared a long embrace and a few laughs after the match. Asked during her press conference about her emotions, Keys joked that "I think drinks will help me through this tough time." She added that she had indeed been invited to the celebration, but wanted more. "The hint was, like, you should buy me a bag or something tomorrow."
Hingis and Murray triumph in mixed doubles
Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray won the US Open mixed doubles championship for their second Grand Slam title in two tournaments as a team. Hingis and Murray beat Michael Venus of New Zealand and Chan Hao-Ching of Taiwan 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 in a match tiebreaker Saturday at Flushing Meadows. Hingis, already a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and Murray are 10-0 as a duo. They won Wimbledon in July. This is Hingis' seventh mixed doubles major trophy and second at the U.S. Open. She will play in the women's doubles final on Sunday, with Chan's sister as her partner. Murray, the older brother of two-time Wimbledon champion Andy, won his third Grand Slam mixed doubles title.
