McCullum may miss third Sri lanka ODI

Nelson: New Zealand could get an earlier than expected taste of life without Brendon McCullum on Thursday with the swashbuckling captain likely to sit out the third one-day international against Sri lanka. McCullum, who will retire from international cricket in February, hurt his back in the second ODI against Sri lanka on Tuesday. "He's still pretty sore," coach Mike Hesson said after McCullum skipped training on Wednesday. "It's unlikely he'll play but he's still a chance." New Zealand won the first two ODIs with ease, and even though they totally outclassed Sri lanka McCullum was injured when he crashed into the fence in a attempt to cut off boundary.

laxmi Shukla announces retirement

Kolkata: Two days after he was named in the Bengal squad, former captain and veteran all-rounder laxmi Ratan Shukla on Wednesday announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. "For last one month, I was not getting the right motivation... Not feeling myself, the link was missing," the most-capped Bengal player said in a news conference with his six-year-old son Agastya this afternoon at his club Mohun Bagan. "Mentally, I was not ready to play again. I started having this feeling for about a month and was not able to sleep properly. Now I can sleep peacefully," the 34-year-old player added in his emotional speech with his son hugging him.

Vinesh, Sakshi bag gold medals

New Delhi: Emerging India grapplers Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik finished with yellow medals in Women's 53kg and 60kg Freestyle categories, respectively, on Day 2 of the Senior National Wrestling championship here on Wednesday. Despite fighting in an upper weight division of 53kg rather than her usual 48kg, Vinesh showed her class by beating Mamta Rani in the final bout to bag the gold. Sheetal and Seema settled for bronze medal in this category.

‘Was hurt when dropped mid-series’

New Delhi: legendary opener Virender Sehwag on Wednesday admitted that he was "hurt" after being dropped in the middle of the 2013 Test series against Australia without any "communication from team management or selectors." Sehwag was dropped after the second Test against Australia in Hyderabad but the 'Nawab of Najafgarh' felt that selectors should have given him an option to play two more Tests and retire in an India jersey. "I hadn't scored runs in two Tests against Australia. So, I was thinking I would get a couple of more opportunities to perform well in the last two Tests (of the series) and then get dropped if I didn't perform. If selectors would have given me that option to play two more Tests and say that you play two matches and then retire, I would have thought about it," Sehwag told ESPN Cricinfo.
