Giles bitter at England snub
london: Ashley Giles has said he was “bitterly disappointed” to miss out on being appointed as the new head coach of England. Peter Moores was recalled for a second spell in charge after Flower stood down following England’s 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia. Former England spinner Giles appeared to be in pole position to replace Flower, having been the national limited overs coach since November 2012 and a member of the selection panel. However, his cause was not helped by a poor run of results in one-day games in Australia and England’s humiliating loss to the Netherlands at last month’s World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. “I was confident (of getting the job),” Giles told Sky Sports on Sunday. “I went into the interview and thought I had as equal a chance as anyone else, if not a better chance having been close to the team and known what the systems are and, at the same time, not really had full control.
Penalty cost Patel & Co.
Nurburgring: A 20-second penalty in the second race cost Aditya Patel and his co-driver Cesar Campanico a good result as they finished in the sixth place after securing eighth position in the opening race of the International GT Open Series, here on Sunday. Campanico Qualified fifth for race one while Patel who is sponsored by JK Tyres, Audi India and Amante had qualified sixth for race two. Campanico started race one and handed over the car to the Indian whilst running fifth. However, a decision to change tyres during the pitstop worked against Patel and he lost a further three places on the opening lap, bringing the car home in a fine 8th place.
Klizan wins shock Munich title
Berlin: Qualifier Martin Klizan pulled off a shock victory over top-seed Fabio Fognini in Sunday’s final of the Munich ATP tournament to claim only the second title of his career. The Slovakian, ranked 111th in the world, recovered from losing the first set to claim a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win which denied Fognini, ranked 13th in the world, his third straight title in Germany having won last season’s Hamburg and Stuttgart tournaments. The 24-year-old Klizan, whose only previous ATP tournament win was in St Petersburg in 2012, deserved his clay-court title having beaten Russian third-seed Mikhail Youzhny in the second round, then defending champion and second-seed Tommy Haas in Saturday’s semi-final.
