No law for son-in-law!

New Delhi: BCCI president N Srinivasan should thank the Almighty that Gurunath Meiyappan is not his son but son-in-law. The ICC’s constitution has a detailed documentation on the Code of Ethics for the custodians of the game in various countries and clauses which are considered as serious breach. According to ICC’s Code of Ethics, there is a specific clause pertaining to gambling, gaming and betting where a ‘Director’ or equivalent and his family members cannot indulge in any activity pertaining to “betting business” but there is no specific mention of son-in-law in that particular clause. The clause 7.2 (d) of ICC’s Code of Ethics states: “It is not permitted and a Director shall be in breach of this Code if a member of his immediate family (being a spouse, parent, sibling, son or daughter) has a controlling interest in a betting business, a substantial relationship with a betting business or is employed in the day to day operational control of a betting business.” If one goes by the clause, Meiyappan’s arrest on charges of betting on IPl matches can’t be called a breach of ICC code on Srinivasan’s part. At a media conference in Kolkata on Sunday, Srinivasan was specifically asked a question on whether Gurunath’s arrest brings into question the violation of the caluse 7.2 (d), and he gave a half-hearted reply. “If you are looking at ICC rules. I’ve to see it myself. I’ve not done anything wrong. We will see and examine it as you brought it to my attention. It’s for the ICC to look into it,” he said.

leadership defines Team’s show

New Delhi: Captaincy does make a difference in cricket as leadership style directly impacts nearly one-third of performance of various teams at the IPl, a study has revealed. The study by global management consultancy Hay Group has described the leadership of MS Dhoni, the CSK captain, as “visionary and participatory”. The conclusions are based on an analysis of leadership styles of team captains at the IPl to understand the climate they are creating for their respective teams. “We found that 30 per cent of team performance is a direct impact of the captain’s leadership style, hence differentiating the top from the underperformers,” Hay Group said. According to the study, while Dhoni’s leadership is seen as “visionary and participative”, that of Mumbai Indian captain Rohit Sharma is described as “pacesetting”. The study noted that a captain’s leadership style directly affects the way people feel about working for him and the consequent climate created affects the amount of effort that team members put in.

Yaar, spot fixing kyu kiyaIJ

New Delhi: “Dear Tushaar, Please do pray for me! “ That was the short message hastily scribbled by S Sreesanth for a 12-year-old fan who had come to the court today in the hope of meeting the Indian pacer accused in IPl spot-fixing scandal. Tushar kept standing behind Sreesanth during the over two-hour-long court proceedings and finally managed to exchange a few words with him, besides getting his autograph. At the beginning of proceedings in the crowded courtroom, he repeatedly tried to catch a glimpse of the cricketer and managed to attract Sreesanth’s attention. “What’s upIJ” said Sreesanth as he turned around a little and shook hands with Tushar, an 8th grader of Air Force Bal Bharti School. “Kya Yaar, spot fixing kyu kiya (Why did you do spot- fixing)IJ”, was the question that followed from this young fan in a hush-hush voice as the prosecutor and the defence counsel argued their case before the Metropolitan Magistrate. To this, Sreesanth whispered, “Yaar, maine nahi kiya (I did not do it).” However, that was not enough for the kid, who kept asking questions and trying to understand from the mediapersons covering court proceedings as to how the advocates will defend Sreesanth. When the proceedings were about to get over, Tushar borrowed a piece of paper from one of the scribes and asked Sreesanth for an autograph. The cricketer, however, said he was not allowed to give autographs as he is in police custody. On Tushar’s insistence, Sreesanth, once outside the court, took the piece of paper from him and wrote on it — “Dear Tushaar..Please do pray for me!”, with his signature.

IPl removes Fair Play table

New Delhi: The IPl has removed the Fair Play points-table from its website since the two top teams — CSK and RR — are embroiled in the spot fixing scandal. The spot fixing scandal started unravelling May 16 with the arrest of three Rajasthan Royal players Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and India fast bowler S. Sreesanth by Delhi Police. The arrest thereafter of CSK chief executive Gurunath Meiyappan by Mumbai police on Friday prompted IPl to remove the Fair Play points-table from its website.           PNS/Agencies
