Parth Tayal talks to Mithun Chakraborty about his journey on TV, how comedy has evolved over the years and upcoming projects
How did The Drama Company catch your imaginationIJ
To make people laugh is the toughest thing for an artist. Comedy depends on timing and if we miss even a second the humour gets lost. The offer was challenging & I love to take up new challenges.
Tell us about your character Shambu DadaIJ
Shambu Dada is an event manager who organises theatre shows abroad. Dada will be seen judging the drama done by a group of misfits aspiring comedians to make a play to impress me in exchange for a world tour.
Why TVIJ
TV attracts more viewership as compared to films. This is evident from the TRP’s. People underestimate this medium. I owe a lot to TV as it brought me into every household and helped me connects with so many people. Now, if I cross paths with a kid, even he knows me and says my dialogue: “Kya baat... kya baat... kya baat...”
How different is comedy on TV from comedy in filmsIJ
Comedy is comedy be it TV or films. What changes is the cast. A hero will do everything be it comedy, action or romance in films. On TV, we have professionals doing comedy. Comic timing is much better on TV shows.
Would you like to act in the remake of any of your hit moviesIJ
Times have changed. I never advise my son to watch even half my films, so how can I even think of making a remake. What’s done is done, be it a success or failure. If everybody will get stuck to on one thing, there will be no scope of coming up with new things.
Do you see The Kapil Sharma Show as a competitionIJ
Both shows are on Sony. We all are working for the same channel and we want both the shows to do well. Kapil has set a benchmark for all comedy shows and to achieve even a fraction of what he has achieved would be success for us.
Does it bother you that people can’t get over your Disco Dancer imageIJ
People remember things that made an impact on them. I feel blessed that people still remember me that way.
What more are you doingIJ
I am playing a lead role in Ram Gopal Verma’s next horror film Geher. I have done two Bengali films Buddhuram Dhol Duniya Gol and White Mischef and also debuting in Kannada cinema with The Villian.
What does your daughter, Dishani, want to make a career inIJ
It’s a mystery to me as well. She is keen to sing but given the hype by the media, her mind has changed. She also wants to pursue a career in acting. For now, she is in the US learning acting.
