A Mamma Mia sequel without the life and blood of the film Meryl Streepij Blasphemy you would say. Insipid, I would say, despite all the effort put in, despite the dishy Greek locales, despite all the azure tones of the Aegean Sea, despite all the song and dance and, last but not least, despite completely dishy Pierce Brosnan!
Killing off Meryl Streep and then revisiting the musical would seem like a cold, premeditated suicide mission but it is the lack of any such motive that makes you sit through Mamma Mia Here We Go Again!
To start with the songs and the music are creatively devised. Old hummable numbers in this lunatic age of acid rock, is quite a heartbeat come to think of it. And, this film fleshes itself out on a peppy, brilliant score both in the background and in the front seat too. The movie is revisited by Streep’s daughter who wants to give her a befitting tribute by running this quaint hotel on the island which Streep had made her home going through life and relationships like the breeze caressing the island from all sides.
On another level, there is a constant flashback too, showing Streep’s youthful journey to the island and her relationships which have now grown into three fine old men, one of whom could be the daughter’s father! And, of course, the two lovely friends (Cher and Walters) who give the film some more groove. But Meryl, you should’ve been there in this one too.
