Costumes play an important role in adding life to performances, they not only help in expressing the emotion, but they also set the tone of the performance. From the moment the dancer takes the stage, costumes help to grab the attention of the audience. Since it is imperative to choose the right costume for any dance form, the National Centre for the Performing Arts will be conducting an insightful workshop on reimaging dance costumes with renowned costume designer and curator Sandhya Raman.

Sharing her insights on the relevance and need for a workshop such as this, Swapnokalpa Dasgupta, Head of Dance, NCPA says: “When classical Indian dances were reconstructed and reintroduced, the costumes worn by dancers were standardised. There was very little room for deviation. However, more recently, exponents have been reinterpreting and reimagining costumes to essay different roles and convey their themes visually. This is important because while dancers typically tend to focus more on the content of their performances, the costume is what grabs the attention of the audience. In classical dance text, costumes are actually a part of abhinaya.”

Scheduled for Fridays, June 18 and June 25 the two-day workshop will prove to be a unique opportunity for aspiring designers and dancers to learn and get an insight into the industry. Divided into two parts, the attendees are sure to benefit from Raman’s expertise on the nuances that one should consider while designing costumes for live performances.

The two-day workshop will focus on:

Day 1: Revisiting the reason for costuming for dance

Day 2: Costume clinic – An interactive session where students can discuss their ideas and get specific inputs on their designs.

Time:  6 pm over a Zoom call
