'Glad to play this intense role'

Parth Tayal

Rajeshwari Sachdev, who is all set to replace Anuja Sathe in Peshwa Bajirao, talks to Parth Tayal about her 25-year-long journey & how historical shows are a good trend

What was so interesting about the character of Radha BaiIJ

Radha Bai was Bajirao’s mother so it’s a very important role and this character has got a good standing. Also, I found this role challenging which brings out the best in me. Moreover, I have worked with this production house before so it gave me more reasons to say yes.

Any apprehensions in playing an elder womanIJ

No, as an actor I feel there is no small or big role. Every character is important, so I have no apprehensions. I am glad I got a chance to play such an intense character.

Do you believe you can bring the same intensity as Anuja Sathe did in the younger versionIJ

I don’t know whether I will be able to match the intensity of Anuja Sathe because we are different individuals. Since the show has taken a leap, there will be a difference in the character which will get more mature.

From playing a widow in Balika Vadhu to being mother to Peshwa Bajirao, what kind of preps do you do while making such drastic shiftsIJ

The preparations remain the same but what changes are perspective, scenario and language. For a historical show, language is key and research of the character important.

How has your journey been so farIJ

In last 25 years, my journey has been awesome and I feel glad I am still getting good work. I feel blessed I have made it so far on my own and still doing good.

What drew your attention to reality showsIJ Do you still want to do shows like Bigg BossIJ

After doing Nach Baliye, I started getting more shows and I feel anything that gives an individual a chance to show her talent is good. But I don’t think I will be doing any reality show now, especially something like Bigg Boss. To do a show like that a person needs to be isolated for a long time and I am concerned about my family to leave them for such a long gap.

Why so much focus on historical showsIJ

It’s good that more and more historical shows are coming up and people are taking an interest in them. They tell you so much about our country’s rich past and culture. History is a great part of any country. Our present emanates from our past which also shapes our future.

Do you think writers do justice to the historical and mythological showsIJ

Yes, they do. But, at the same time, it’s a TV show so some drama is bound to happen as that keeps the show interesting. With limited resources in hand and the pressure of writing episodes on a daily basis, the writers are doing a commendable job.
