Another eerie act

Zee TV has added another supernatural show Brahmarakshas to its repertoire. ANGElA PAlJOR reports from Mumbai on what the show is about

Indian television has been evolving through the ages — from the saas-bahu dramas which lacked definite seasons and continued for years, to being challenged by the teen love stories and comedy shows. Today, the industry has been experimenting with numerous technologies, including digital animations and limited episodes. Then came Naagin, one of the most popular TV soap in recent times with extensive use of VFX and introduced a new genre — that of supernatural.

Following this new trend, Zee TV has launched the new weekend thriller,  Brahmarakshas-Jaag Utha Shaitaan, that went on air from August 6, 2016. The show not only offers supernatural elements in the fictional village of Kamalpura but is also a mix of romance and thriller. The show features Krystle D’Souza, who is coming on TV after a break of one and a half years, and Aham Sharma in the lead roles, along with Kishwer Merchant and Rakshanda Khan.

Commenting on the genre and format of the show, Sharma said: “It’s better to be part of a finite show because you can plan things from the beginning to the end. If it’s a daily show, one keeps on adding things just to stretch it. As an actor, I like to be part of many projects so that I can explore different lives. For me it’s a good thing that I will be on this show for a fixed number of episodes, and then I’ll move onto another one. Being a supernatural show, it’s refreshing.”

Shooting with VFX is a different ballgame, and it was no different for Sharma. “At times, you have to imagine things that you shoot on croma. For instance, you need to picture someone coming towards you when there is no one there. At times it becomes a little difficult to visualise the intensity, how scared one should be, the impact. These are the things that one has to judge by the script and the situation,” he tells you.

D’Souza, who has previously been seen as the bahu, behen or beti, is all set to challenge the brahmarakshas in this one. Talking about the changing trend in TV, she  tells you that it’s good that TV shows are changing, it’s a breath of fresh air. “Today, people want variety and that’s why we have so many channels airing all kinds of shows. This show deals with a unique concept present in the Vedas which most people are unaware of. It’s a suspense thriller, a show which the whole family can watch together,” D’Souza says

The story revolves around a contract marriage between Raina (D’Souza) and Rishabh (Sharma) who have lost someone dear in the mysterious village of Kamalpura. Eventually, the two will challenge the brahmarakshas.
