The concept of the show, as far as I know, on television is brand new. We’re dealing with a contemporary subject matter that either has affected us or will affect us.

We’re going to have a Government that we want to have in this show. We have a President who stated he thinks he can make a positive difference in the world. It means he wants to do good and he wants a Secretary of State who understands that and buys into that.
What makes Elizabeth unusual in her role as Secretary of StateIJ
What we have in the show, is a Secretary of State who admittedly does not have political ambitions. She has come on at the request of the President and she is doing it under a sense of obligation from having left her position at the CIA earlier than she thinks. So, she feels she owes a little something coupled with a sense of duty to God and country. You’ll watch a woman with a really level head, clear eyed, and she has resources.
What does Téa leoni bring to her role as ElizabethIJ
She really enthusiastically accepted the role. We sent her the script on the weekend and by Monday she was like: “Yeah, I’m in’. It’s one of those things where everything that needs to come together came together. I worked with Téa some years ago in the movie Deep Impact in which I played the President and she was a journalist. I have seen her work in the intervening years and she is really an awesome actress.
How would you explain the on-screen chemistry between Téa leoni and Tim DalyIJ
So much in casting is like serendipity. Two actors come together and the chemistry is just right. Other times they come together and then do incredible work together and sometimes they can’t stand each other’s guts. So, here we have the best of both worlds. The two of them really like each other and so the chemistry is perfect.
Why is it important to have strong women characters on TVIJ
We have a lot of strong women. They just don’t always come up in positions that they should be in. If you look today, at the ladies who our president they have caliber to be up there.
We think that with Madam Secretary we’re going to fit right in with what people are looking for. There’s a slot for us. Having a good strong female lead is one of the things that I’m totally in for always.

It’s like making the perfect bread — all the ingredients you need are there. The same is with our show. Hence, there is no reason why people will not love enjoy watching it.
