Forging new paradigms in management and Rural Development education, and preparing new age professionals to cope up with the opportunities and threats posed by the new economy, Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) has been carving a niche for itself in the areas of management education, rural development, social research, consultancy and training and development interventions for the past 55 years.

The oldest B- School in the capital city is a premier management school today, which caters to the human resource requirements of the industries, information technology sector and non-governmental organisations. Moreover, the institute has grown as an important resource centre for development sector in this region.

“From a humble beginning made with the objective of training young men & women XISS has trodden a long path of glory and success. In 1973, the Institute was registered as a separate educational society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. From that point in history it has been recognised as one of the most outstanding management schools in India,” said Fr. Alexius Ekka S.J.

From an extension centre of St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, to becoming one of the India’s most reputed educational institutions, the journey for XISS has all along been guided by the needs and aspirations of the region in which it operates.

“Education at XISS means sensitising the students with appropriate values, attitudes and critical thinking tools that set them apart as ‘Professionals with a Difference’,” quipped Viplav Thakur, Professor Business Policy and Strategic management.

At XISS, the curricula of various academic programmes are revised and updated constantly so as to meet the emerging needs of the industries and development sector. No wonder, the institute has turned into a favourite hunting ground for both the corporate and development sectors to meet their manpower requirements. The alumni have also lived up to the expectations of their employers. That is why they participate in the campus recruitment programmes year after year quite religiously. “They have placed utmost faith in the integrity and professional competence of XISS fraternity. This is a vivid testimony of our commitment to excellence and endeavour to create professionals with a difference,” stated HOD Department of Human Resources, SR Shauq.

Placement of the institution is 100 per cent and students have been placed in top notch brands like Daimler, SKGFS - IMFR Co, BRlPS, Jet Airways, Adhunik Group, HDFC Bank, CASA, SBI General Insurance Co. and Emami.

As a service institution, XISS has a vision of just, humane, and equitable society where the underprivileged (poor and oppressed) assume their rightful place.  Students of XISS are regularly visiting Bharat Jagriti Kendra, RINPAS and CIP for the empowerment of the deprived so that they shape their own destiny.

The Department of Research and Publications (R&P) of XISS which has now completed more than ten years of its existence in the Institute brings out a Research Journal titled Jharkhand Journal of Development and Management Studies (JJDMS) in the context of reconstruction and transformation of Jharkhand and its population in general, and ‘reference groups’ in particular. The quarterly journal vividly illustrates the ideas and thoughts of students and eminent personalities of all over the country on prevailing contemporary issues.

“ The justification of the publication of ‘JJDMS’ through XISS is concerned with an aim to provide to young professionals, academicians, and policy-makers the raw materials for the study of social processes and to reveal intended and un-intended consequences of specific social action to the common man by ‘putting the last first’,” added further Thakur.

Apart from it the institution yearly publishes an XISS Bulletin in which all the movements of XISS, departmental news, placement and publication and research are mentioned.

Student's life at XISS is a rich blend of learning and fun. XISS campus foster community and gives students the chance to engage in all aspects of life. The students as partners share ideas and initiate changes, keeping in tune with the ever-changing corporate world. Students play a crucial role in improving their own skills and creating an exciting and innovative environment, which adds to their life. Supriya, PGDPM, Final year student quipped, “At XISS, a common thread of exceptional talent and a desire to learn and excel ties students coming from diverse culture and demographic background together. In this lively environment, each student feel inspired to exploit their potential to the full extent. The atmosphere creates deep, lifelong friendships, a valuable business network, of course, but lasting personal connections above all.”

At XISS, extracurricular activities not only provide a break from the rigors of intensive study but also bestow great opportunities for the students to hone and showcase their talent and organizational abilities. Every year under the aegis of different forums and bodies students involve themselves in recreational, cultural, intellectual, professional or charitable activities. The socio-cultural ethos at the campus plays an important role in providing vibrancy to an otherwise, very demanding life of a future-manager. Few days back the college fest ‘Panache’ created sensation in the capital city.

Many students’ clubs are formed in the stupendous campus. CASC (Cultural & Sports Committee) is serving as a platform for showcasing the sporting prowess and cultural activities like singing, dancing and dramatics of the students. PHONIX (Promoting Human Operations & Event Nurturing in XISS) a democratic students’ committee,  organizes  management  games, business, quizzes,  paper  presentations, guest lectures and other knowledge sharing activities with the students, for the students and by the students. XAR (Xavier Alumni Relations) is continuously updating contacts and keep in touch with the Institute’s vast populace of alumni spread across the globe.

last but not the least MART Voice group formed by and for the students acts as a roof under which four clubs namely Kotler Marketing Group, Buffet Finance Group, Dhirubhai Entrepreneurship Group and InFi Group operate. “Through these clubs students engage themselves in case competitions, management games, business quiz, debates, financial analysis and market research which not only helps them to improve their analytical, logical and interpersonal skills but also provide them with opportunity to apply their knowledge in solving problems practically faced by business organisations in real life situations,” added Thakur.
