Ranchi Municipal Corporation in association with Institute for Human Development (IHD) and All India Kabadi Mazdoor Mahasangh (AIKMM) organised a Workshop cum Seminar on Consultation on Waste Management in Ranchi, the Draft MSW Rules, 2013 and the role of Informal Waste Workers at RMC hall on this Wednesday.

The seminar was presided over by RMC CEO Deepankar Panda. While addressing the gathering Panda said that 67 cities have been already declared under JNNURM and now Ranchi too has added under this category. So it’s better to have such types of seminars and workshops, and moreover we should try to understand the views of scholars and researchers regarding differentiation and management of wastes.

The seminar continued with the presentations from the Waste Management Consultant, Anjor Bhaskar who discussed on the present situation of waste management, the problems and the practices across various cities and asked to make suggestion on its improvement. Bhaskar then said that it’s a common practice of the people to throw the waste out of their house, and from the city to the outskirts near villages. But the time has changed now the

villagers at outskirts have started protesting and says to dump the wastes from where it is brought. So as Bhaskar says its now time to understand the techniques to manage the wastes.

As Tata Institute of Social Sciences is trying to prepare the Waste Management Policy, it’s necessary to know actually What is Municipal Solid WasteIJ As the total waste produced in Ranchi city is 500 tonnes out of which 60 per cent is Organic Waste, 20 per cent of it is Dry Recyclable Waste and 20 percent of it is Non-recyclable Waste. According to Anjor, by the initiative of each and every person if one understands the differences between the wastes, it can improve the condition of the city and also the condition of the poor informal waste workers.

The workshop was then followed by the Director of IHD Hareshwar Dayal, whoappreciated the gathering for the participation in the workshop in huge number. Dayal further added that such types of initiatives may change our vision and also the environment which may lead to better life.
