Voters still struggling to find their names in electoral roll

VIDHI PODDAR

Amit Kumar tried registering himself as a voter in the special drive but is struggling still to find his name in the electoral roll published on the Election Commission’s official website. He is running from pillar to post at Collectorate Returning Officer’s office to know why his name is missing when the name of his entire family members figure in the final electoral list uploaded on the official website of the Election Commission, but to no avail.

Kumar frustratingly explained his ordeal said, “From past few days I am running from A-block to B-block at collectorate just to find out why my name is missing in the list as my entire family members name figure in the electoral roll. No one is able to guide me how the problem will be sorted out. All they know is to place the problem from one table to another.”

like Kumar there are many people who are daily visiting the returning officer’s office in search of the same reply from the staffs.“From past three days I have been receiving the same reply from the staffs ‘wait and watch as the final list preparation work is in process’, and above all the landline number also doesn’t respond. To seek any small information I have to come all the way from Hinoo. I am fed up with the scenario,” added Pappiya Chatterjee.

When officers at the returning office were enquired over the matter they tried to defend them by shifting it towards the work load pressure.“The work pressure is very high on us. It becomes difficult for us to carry out work and answer people’s query simultaneously as we have to accomplish our work on stipulated time schedule. After publishing the final electoral roll is prepared the voter’s query will be addressed,” said an official.

Interestingly, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer’s has extended the date of publishing of final electoral list from March 30 to first week of April.District Public Relation Officer (DPRO) Ranchi Paltu Mahto throwing light on the above said, “looking the pressure of the officials at returning officer’s office who are involved in the preparation of final enrollment roll this decision has been taken to upload the final enrollment list within April’s first week. A formal notification has also been published for the department.”

Meanwhile, some of the Booth level Officer’s (BlOs) are found lethargic in discharging their duties and orders had been issued to take action against those BlOs who were found sluggish towards their duty.
