Vocational courses at under-graduate and post-graduate levels are gaining popularity at the universities imparting education through distance learning in the State.

In fact, the universities registered with Distance learning Council (DEC) are of the opinion that the demand for correspondence vocational courses has increased in the past two to three years.

A counselor at a Purulia Road study centre of Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) said, “We usually enroll students for Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and MBA.

“Most of the students are not interested in traditional course like Bachelor of Arts or Master of Arts or Science due to its less scope in grabbing a technical job with a handsome salary package.”

“Corporate or Government employees pursue MBA for the sake of promotion in their jobs instead of grasping management knowledge as academic benefit,” added the SMU counselor.

lovely Professional University Ranchi Centre Director Priyadarshi Amar said, “Student strength is more at our study centres of Ranchi, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Koderma for Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), BCA and MBA.

It is because three courses are job oriented. Bachelor in Journalism and Mass Communication is also a new preference for the youngsters these days.”

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) on the other side is leading a

parallel role in both traditional and vocational courses.

Assistant Regional Director Arvind Manoj Kumar Singh said, “Most of our students are either preparing for competitive job entrance exams or working as professionals in Pubic or Private Sector.

|The competitive exam aspirants especially for Staff Selection Commission or Public Service Commission opt for traditional courses like Hindi, English, Sociology or Psychology both at bachelors and masters degree since it benefits them in cracking these job examinations.”

G Gunjan Jha, Director of a study centre of Vinayaka Missions University and NIMS University at line Tank road also supported Singh’s view.

He said, “Though the demand for BCA, BBA and MBA and Master of Computer Applications has increased because of its technical career scope. But there are few

working professionals

especially graduate teachers who opt for traditional

post graduate courses in order to get promotion on the basis of their educational qualifications in future.”
