'Village adoption' drive yet to gain pace in RU colleges

Despite instructions to adopt ‘cashless transaction’ modes with immediate effect and to impart the benefits of this scheme among the natives by adopting at least five villages, several colleges under Ranchi University (RU) are yet to roll out the plan. Interestingly, many college principals here in Ranchi are clueless about this ambitious project. This is in spite of the fact that the details of the project had been furnished two months back after a meeting was conducted with university officials and State government representatives.

“We have initiated the training procedure and the training is only restricted to college students. In the recent meeting no such instructions was issued to the college principals for adoption of villages to impart cashless transaction training among the village dwellers,” said, Ranchi Women’s College, Principal, Manju Sinha who claimed that more than 500 college students have been trained in various cashless transaction methodologies.

Similarly, Ranchi College, Principal UC Mehta said that they are yet to roll out the plan of adopting colleges for imparting knowledge of cashless transaction among villagers as they have received no formal letter from university.

After the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar’s directives to all universities across India to adopt ‘Cashless transaction’ medium and to promote the same among the village community members yet it seems that the plan to link both students and rural residents with this ambitious scheme is likely to linger further. However, some colleges under RU have initiated the project but they too are finding it difficult to roll out the proposal in full-fledged way.

“We have student strength of 8,000. Around 3,000 students studying in our college come from rural areas. Training of students has already begun. It is difficult to adopt five villages at a time, as location of the college is one prime concern here. Our students are training some people at Hatma village,” said, SS Memorial College, Principal, Sudhir Kumar Verma, who has collaborated with United Bank of India for imparting cashless transaction training among the students.

Similarly, Doranda College that has more than 60 per cent strength of students hailing for rural areas has initiated the training procedure in association with Oriental Bank of Commerce. “Approximately 1,000 students have received training in different formats of new media applications. Village adoption procedure has not been done exactly as it was mentioned but we have instructed the students to impart training in their respective localities. Soon Tupudana and lohardaga areas will be covered. Faculty members will inspect these rural setups in the month of February,” Principal, Doranda College, VS Tiwari, said.

Notably, a large number of colleges are yet to begin the project. On November 26, officials of Department of Higher and Technical Education had written to all the universities to initiate the scheme at the earliest. The communiqué stated that the college students are mandated to communicate the knowledge of e-wallets and other new media applications among the denizens especially the village community members by adopting at least 10 families yet lack of communication has put the entire project on backseat.

“Soon a notification will be issued to all colleges for adoption of five villages to promote cashless training to rural people. All principals were instructed in December 2016 to initiate the project at their respective colleges soon,” said, RU PRO, PK Jha.
