The veterinary team of Birsa Biological Park Ormanjhi which was here on Sunday and Monday, April 27 & 28, for tranquilizing a wounded female elephant in the tiger reserve Palamu had to return disappointed as the ailing female elephant could not be traced down. The team went back Monday evening.
Sources said there is a deep wound in the right foreleg of this female elephant forcing it to drag on for the last 4 or 5 weeks. Nevertheless, the female elephant was sighted in compartment 9 of Bareysarn on April 25 but when came the vet team from Ormanjhi it went traceless.
The Buffer DFO of the tiger reserve, Anil K Mishra, has confirmed that vet team of Ormanjhi could do nothing as the female elephant just could not be found. Whether it must be dead or alive, to which this dedicated officer said “It must be alive. The elephant is not now in isolation. It appears she has been a part of herd of elephants.”
Mishra added there is a herd of elephants at Halhad area where are a couple of baby elephants of just one and a half month live and the other elephants are too protective of these children and going there to find out if this female elephant is there or not will be equal to inviting all risks to one’s limbs.
Mishra discounted fears that the ailing elephant could be a dead but too many people are searching it and if anything of the size of elephant is dead it is bound to give too many signals like knocking down stench, odour, profusion of maggots/insects which are not here and as such, this elephant is alive and is a part of any herd of elephants. He said it is no wonder if this elephant has recovered itself too as nature cures them much faster than it does cure human beings.
