SHRUTI RANJAN

Vinoba Bhave University is gearing up to host its 8th convocation on August 05, when it will provide degrees to a 6,633 students – an all time high for the university.

“The event is one of the biggest convocation felicitation ceremonies of the State and we are going to celebrate this event in the truest traditional form with traditional attire and stole, doing away with the legacy of the west,” said Dr. Ramesh Sharan, the Vice Chancellor of the University.

The event will be graced by Governor cum Chancellor, Droupadi Murmu. Chief Guest, Dr Dinesh Oraon, Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly will also attend the event.

The university is going to replace the earlier attire and gown by traditional stole handcrafted by the Santhali artisans in their indigenous looms, giving it a traditional essence of Jharkhand’s culture. It will also have printed symbols on it.

The dignitaries, who would be giving away the degrees, would be provided with traditional head gears inspired by the ‘Pagari’ popularised by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya.

The event will be organised at Vinodini Tarwe Park in the name of first Vice Chancellor of the university, situated within the University premises.

A total of 142 PhD degrees and 102 PG toppers, three best graduates, 2,853 Medical and Engineering Postgraduate degrees will be distributed.

“Monsoon is causing a little hindrance in the preparation process but we are making sure the event is conducted with utmost ease,” said an official involved in the preparatory process.

The previous convocation at the university witnessed 5,235 degrees distributed by the former President Pranab Mukherjee and the first convocation in 1994 recorded distribution of 585 degrees. Since then the graph has just gone high.
