Tata Power's sewage treatment plant begins operation at Jojobera

PNS

Tata Power has been implementing the 3R principle (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) for conservation of the environment at its various facilities. Taking forward the initiative, the company’s sewage treatment plant at its Jojobera Power Plant in Jamshedpur became functional and it helps to treat 135 kilolitres of water per day.

The plant provides multiple benefits such as save the environment by not letting the sewage to mix with the water body; the treated water is used for gardening which saves the natural resources; it further avoids ecological damage due to detergents, fertilizers and sewage to an aquatic system.

The three treatments done on the sewage are Primary Treatment–involves physical treatment like screening; Secondary Treatment–A biological process where the major COD & BOD reduction takes place, followed by a chlorination system which helps in disinfection. Tertiary Treatment– there are filters (MGF & ACF) provided to polish the treated sewage to the extent of reuse. Activated Carbon filter is one of the widely used media for adsorption of impurities like Chlorine, Organics etc. This tertiary treated water can be reused in various applications like Car wash, Gardening etc.

Speaking on the occasion, VV Namjoshi, chief–Jojobera Station, Tata Power, Jamshedpur, said, “Tata Power’s commitment to safeguard our environment in its plants has always been one of our top priorities. In order to provide sustainable solution to the treatment of water, this sewage treatment plant has been installed. The implementation of 3R principle (Reuse, Reduce and Recycle) has aided in environmental conservation, reduced water consumption and further reuse water for gardening, car wash etc. The implementation of this project has enabled us to spread awareness on the need of reducing water consumption and follow the company’s policy of environment conservation.”

The newly functional Sewage Treatment Plant is based on proven MBBR (moving bed biological reactor) technology for treatment of raw sewage with continuous aeration. It consist of bar screen, stilling chamber , MBBR, flocculator, tube settler, multi grade filter, activated carbon filter and chlorine contact tank, filter press etc.
