A group of students of Std. X from Khalsa Ucch Vidyalaya, Burmamines accompanied by  their teachers, Sampreet Kaur Gill and Amar Kumar Singh, visited CSIR-NMl, Jamshedpur and interacted with the scientists this morning under the aegis of School-NMl interactive programme (SNIP).

The students expressed their excitement and happiness over the laboratory visit as well as interaction with the scientists and research scholars. In fact, they were thrilled while visiting the labs and looking at the practical set ups.

The programme was scheduled for three hours which comprised of an overview of Indian Science and Technology, Documentary film show on CSIR and NMl, visit to NMl Museum/ Archive/ selective units of the laboratory to have an exposure of modern laboratory research environment. Dr. PN Mishra, Sr. Scientist briefed about the programme and gave an overview of CSIR contribution in different branches of Science & Technology. Dr. Mishra introduced the participants to the research scholars in different dept. and explained the students about the history of the lab and the current activities of NMl, the collaborative projects with several countries.

In the electronic waste division Ms. Archana Kumari explained about the solvent extraction and ion exchange process which is involved in the recovery of Indium which is a rare earth metal from lCD model. The students were briefed about different equipments present and its use in the R&D work. Another research scholar Miss Amrita explained about the different apparatus present, their uses and Science behind. The students were briefed about the recovery of metals from the electronic waste as well.

The students also visited the Analytical Chemistry Centre, where Dr. AK Upadhaya told the students about the importance of the different instruments and how it helps in the chemical analysis of the samples based on the results of which models are prepared and further R&D work is carried as per the requirement.

The students further visited the NMl museum and were excited to know about the subsequent achievements in various fields. Dr. Mishra briefly explained the students about the turning point, breakthroughs in the history of NMl, the extensive R&D work conducted by NMl using State-of-art facilities for extracting non-ferrous metals from ores, concentrates and secondary wastes. The students also visited the knowledge resource centre, where they were briefed about the different research publications, the journals, its citation, the e-library facilities, and its usefulness.

During the interactive session at the lecture hall, a number of students asked different questions on minerals, ores, origin of coal, the evolutionary history behind the formation of metals.
