The students’ union poll of Ranchi University (RU), postponed in December 2017 over enrollment issue is likely to get deferred again. Despite attempts, RU has yet not received the details of students enlisted in electoral lists from several colleges. After the ‘enrollment issue row’ that created much hype in the past, the biggest State-run university was supposed to declare the students’ union election dates on January 2 after conducting a meeting with the core committee members.
In spite of issuing a week’s deadline to the college principals, several constituent and affiliated colleges functioning under RU are yet to present the electoral lists to the university. By far, out of 15 constituent colleges under RU only four colleges have submitted the details to the university. According to the university officials, college principals have expressed their helplessness in sending the electoral lists to the university due to different reasons. Earlier due to some technical glitch around 67,000 students were eventually left out of the electoral list that received much criticism from various student union wings.
Taking into account, examination dates of colleges, pending PG results including the upcoming 33rd National youth festival preparations, RU College Coordination College Development Council (CCDC), PK Verma said, “looking at the circumstances at present, it is very difficult to state as on when the poll will be conducted. After consulting several college principals, it is clear that most of them are unprepared regarding this. Though the university has given them the deadline to submit the electoral details of their respective colleges from January 6 to January 9 but no official declaration can be made now.”
The CCDC further added, “After consulting principals of Ranchi College, Ranchi Women’s College including Marwari College, the principals of these colleges directly said that the examination schedule is out and the colleges are gearing up for it.
Also, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team is likely to visit Marwari College in sometime.
Besides this, Birsa College Khunti, Simdega College is still drafting the electoral list while principal of PP College Bundu has mentioned that it is impossible to submit the details before January 14.” Meanwhile, several student union representatives opined that one of the biggest hurdles in conducting the election in the coming days is the upcoming national youth fest scheduled from February 16 to February 20. According to a student leaders, most of the resource persons of the varsity have been engaged in the youth fest as it registers national significance and is associated with university’s prestige.
