Street dogs in Betla: Jawans' friend, wildlife's foe

PNS

The street dogs in Betla have found a kind of messiah in the jawans of the State Police and the CRPF there. The jawans obligingly give the canines their leftover food, much to the relish of the dogs. Betla has both the mix of forces, the State Police and the CRPF, to tackle and combat extremism.

However, these dogs are proving a menace to wildlife of the tiger reserve Palamu. The deer of the National Park Betla under this tiger reserve fear the dogs most as these dogs have no qualms but never miss any chance to pound the deer.

last week a deer was bitten by a dog forcing the tiger reserve officials to segregate it and treat it with antibiotic spray, before being released in the open.

Confirming this attack by dog on deer the DFO Core of the tiger reserve Premjit Anand said this incident has given us concern as we understand these street dogs who get free food from the jawans in lieu of their barking at night on spotting any outsider/suspicious lurking person which alert the jawans is in fact proving dangerous for our wild life especially the deer which is out run by dogs and are even pounced upon by them.

Anand said this menace is there in Betla and there is no way out here. Those who have been watching Jharkhand’s DGP remember DGP Shivaji Mahan Caire who asked the cops in Naxal-hit districts of this State to befriend the dogs to ward off the Naxals. Perhaps the jawans are following the same approach.
