First phase of panchayat polls in Giridih district on Sunday in three block –Giridih town, Jamua and Gandey –registered 77 per cent in Giridih town block. Jamua registered 77 percent and Gandey witnessed 78%. Polling in all three blocks was conducted peacefully with no major incidents reported from anywhere except Jamua barring stray incidents of violence at booth no 433 and 434 under the Nawdiha police station here on Sunday, said DC Uma Shankar Singh.
At Nawdiha, supporters of one group of mukhiya candidate supporters assaulted the voters at booths of 433 and 434 and prevented them from casting their votes.The situation was brought under control following the deployment of force. local police alleged that the supporters of one group indulged in large scale rigging at the same booths.The miscreants also set five motor bikes of police on fire at the booth center in Jamua block this morning.
While confirming the incident DC Uma Shankar Singh said that two separate groups of local villagers clashed with each other near the polling booths.
