Stem Cell Therapy boon for disabled

SHRUTI RANJAN

With a figure of approximately 80,000 disabled people in the State, Neuro Regenerative Rehabilitation Therapy (NRRT) is becoming the new ray of hope for people suffering from Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Spinal Cord Injury, and many such neuro-damaged conditions say an expert from NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute.

Dhairya, an eight-year-old child from Ranchi, has substantially benefitted from the NRRT therapy at NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute. He is suffering from a case of Bilateral Hemiparesis Post Cardiac Arrest, a result of post severe pneumonia he suffered at the age of one and a half years. Rushing him to various known hospitals in the City as well as in Vellore, Dhairya’s parents finally discovered NRRT treatment at NeuroGen.

He underwent Stem Cell Treatment along with customised therapy to regain his balance, strength, speech and cognition. “Dhairya has received shots of stem cell therapy five times and we are already overwhelmed with the improvement in our child. After visiting numerous doctors and spending a considerable amount of money in his diagnosis and treatment with no result left us hopeless but stem cell therapy has really worked for him,” said Avinchal, Dhairya’s father.

Other disabilities where adult stem cell therapy has proved to be helpful are Celebral Palsy, Spinal Cord Injury and post accident trauma. The procedure is safe, without the stitches and cuts involved. The regenerative stem cells are extracted from the bone marrow of the individual and then injected in the spinal cord.

India has a number count of 2.68 crores of disabled people with 1 crore children. While their physical or mental disability is a challenge enough for them, social exclusion and dependency also act as hurdles for them. “Stem Cell therapy works on the principle of Repair, Replace and Regenerate. Progress in an individual can be seen within two months of the therapy. Our aim is to primarily make them independent to do their personal chores and not be dependent on anybody,” said Dr. Richa Bansod, Neurosurgeon and Head Surgical Services, NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute.

“It has cost me around two lakhs per stem cell shot,” told Dhairya’s father. “Although the treatment is comparatively expensive, it does not mean people who cannot afford it are left hopeless. We try to help them with charities, funds from trust and government,”added Dr. Bansod.

NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute is organizing a free Stem Cell Therapy OPD camp on August 25th in Ranchi for the patients suffering from incurable neurological disorders from all across the State. The interested ones require to register and book themselves an appointment by calling on 09821529653/09920200400.
