After the second constitutive earthquake tremor felt in Jharkhand within a short span of time (44 days), State Government has asked Indian School of Mines (IIT-ISM) Dhanbad to submit a project report on ‘Study and Research on Earthquake’ earliest.
On Sunday morning a mild tremor felt in several parts of Jharkhand after an earthquake measuring 4.8 on Richter scale with epicentre in Bankura district of West Bengal hits eastern India. Earlier an earthquake of the magnitude of 4.5 on Richter scale hit Andaman & Nicobar Islands at 7.49am too caused mild tremors in some parts of Jharkhand.
Earlier on 12 April this year, a mild tremor was also felt in several parts of Jharkhand after an earthquake, the epicentre was in Jamtara.
Soon after the tremor felt in Jharkhand, officials from the Department of Disaster Management Jharkhand contacted Professor PK Khan, Department of Seismology IIT-ISM Dhanbad. “They have asked me to submit the project report related to Study and Research on Earthquake along with the erection of ‘stations’ across the state for the study,” said Khan.
“Earlier they have (officials) rejected (four times) our project but now they have asked me to submit it again,” added Khan.
Expressing deep concern over the consistently increasing the intensity of the earthquake in the region Khan said, Bankura has become the center of the earthquake; earthquakes often occur here and increasing its intensity is very dangerous for the future. So Jharkhand needs ‘stations’ for the seismographic study and research.
Last year on 28 August a tremor was also felt in several parts of Eastern India along with Jharkhand after an earthquake measuring 4.8 on Richter scale with epicentre in Burdwan district of West Bengal, said Khan.
He said, Dhanbad along with entire Jharkhand comes in the Eastern Regional Shield Area which is very sensitive for the earthquake. So this matter should be taken seriously. “But neither any study center is available in Jharkhand, nor any devices to get the information about the different stages of the earthquake phenomenon or seismographic study, said Khan.
Earlier we have suggested to the State Disaster Department, CMPDI along with other concerned department and PSUs to erect 8 to 10 ‘stations’ across the Jharkhand for the seismographic study, said Khan.
“We have submitted a project report with an estimated cost of RS 2.50 crore to erect stations in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Deoghar, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Gumla, Chaibasa, Pakur, Jamtara and in Maithan for the seismographic study and research but no one paid any heed.
Though, the Bihar government installed 10 such stations across the state for the seismographic study,” added Khan.
