Disturbed after his beloved refused his marriage proposal, a 25-year-old youth jumped into the Kharkai River from Kharkai Bridge in Bistupur on Thursday morning. As the onlookers saw him jumping they jumped into the river and rescued him. The youth, was identified as Uttam Kumar, a resident of Bagbera Traffic Colony in Bagbera.

“I wanted to die as there is nothing left for me in this world. The girl I love belongs to other caste and due to which our parents are opposed to our affair about which they had come to know. Fearing that they would separate us by putting restriction, we got married at a temple a month ago,” narrated Kumar.

He said after the family members of the girl came to know about our secret marriage, they had organised a meeting. The girl gave her consent that she would marry me, but under the pressure of her parents, she later refused.

Officer-in-charge, Bistupur police station, Jitendra Kumar confirmed that a youth had made an attempt to commit suicide by jumping in the swollen Kharkai.

Notably, the cases of men and women jumping from the bridges for committing suicide is regular.  Almost every month a woman or a man is reported to have jumped from the bridge, but also rescued by the fishermen and others.

With a sudden rise in suicide attempts from bridges connecting the city, the Jamshedpur-based suicide prevention centre, ‘Jeevan’ has demanded to the administration of East Singhbhum and Seraikela Kharsawan districts to ensure proper security at the bridges of the city.
