'Sound sleep after countless sleepless nights'

RR Srivastava

Marshal Tuti, ex-sub zonal commander of MCC, was reading the magazine ‘Akhand Jyoti’ on Thursday instead of magazines like ‘lal Chingari’, ‘lal Pataka’ etc. When The Pioneer asked him about the last 24 hours experience in this open jail, he said that last night he had sound sleep after many years.

The satisfaction of sound sleep after countless sleepless nights with the family members under one roof was clearly visible on the faces of the chosen 25 inmates of Jharkhand’s first open jail which became functional just two days ago. Daniel lakra of PlFI, who had been brought here from lohardaga, said that now I will do everything to give a better life to my son Tejaswi lakra. His wife Santoshi said that at the time of marriage she was ignorant about the activities of Daniel but very soon understood everything. I tried my best to bring back my husband on right track and now when the Government has given us a chance to live with him, we all family members will certainly try to keep away our son from the shadows of father’s black history.

lakhan Yadav, who had been brought from Chatra, and Charku Pahan from Khunti, were sitting together discussing about the assignment given to them. When this correspondent asked about their feeling they said that we have left our homes to change the system but ultimately realised that we are on wrong path and now we will work together for the pleasure of our family members.

When this correspondent was in open jail premises, the women members of inmates’ family were busy in cleaning the drain which was filled with the garbage of inauguration day. They said that due to choked drain water was not passing out of their cottages so we are clearing the drain because it is our duty.

Superintendant of JP Central Jail S Hassan, Jailor CP Suman and member of State Prisoner Welfare Board Tarun Bodra also talked with the inmates. Superintendant Hassan said that within one or two days we are going to hand over the production work of silk thread to the inmates of this open jail. From this thread, the inmates of JP Central Jail will prepare sarees and Tassar cloth. He said that a couple can earn about Rs 5000 per month by manufacturing thread.

Jailor CP Suman said that the inmates of open jail and their family members will get prepared food from JP Central Jail then after they will have to cook their own food. For electricity solar lamps and street lights have been arranged and we have given volleyball and badminton for entertainment. SP Manoj Kaushik has specially deputed 21 policemen in this jail who will work in

three shifts.
