Show-cause notices boomerang at VBU?

RR Srivastava

The decision of the Vinoba Bhave University administration to issue show-cause notices to staffs coming late appears to have boomeranged going by the nature of replies being received lately. Many of the staffs have stated that they were ‘on duty’ with senior officials, while others have said that they were doing work till late evenings without any extra incentives.

“They have injured themselves in showing fair play”, it is the concluding punch line of every talk going on in VBU premises. People are saying that VC, PVC, Registrar and others had issued show cause notices to the third and fourth grade staffs to create fear of their powers but these some replies have compelled them to rethink their strategy.

After DP vacation VBU office reopened on 8th October. At about 10:30 a.m. VC Prof. Gurdeep Singh seized the attendance register. About 3 dozen staffs had not registered their attendance by that time. At about 11 a.m. when registrar and other officers came, after discussion, show cause notices were issued to all absentees to show fair play.

When the replies started pouring, all got stunned. The replies of some staffs especially drivers and those fourth grade staffs who serves in the houses of some officers are most interesting. Some had replied that he was in duty with that officer since early morning while some had written the name of that officer who had sent him out of station for his personal work.

On the other hand the non-teachings of VBU are also annoyed with this step of the administration. They are saying that if the present VBU administration will not change its working style then they will also start working according to the fixed time table i.e. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A non-teaching union leader said that the present VC and PVC use to stay in office till late evening almost everyday. They come to office in the afternoon or in the evening but the staffs come between 10 to 11 a.m. and they had not kept it in their minds during issuing show cause notices.

On the other hand a group of persons attached with VBU are now looking at Chancellor’s office. They want that the Chancellor Office should go through the replies submitted by the staffs because it will not only clear the working style of present VBU administration but also reveal that how the present administration is misusing the resources of the university.
