Sexual exploitation worries women political leaders

Mukesh Ranjan

Crime against women and abuse of power for fulfilling sexual greed is turning out to be a nightmare for those who are politically well-off. Women leaders in Jharkhand are feeling unsafe particularly after the recent incidents of exploitation by some of the senior leaders of the political parties.

Former HRD Minister Baidyanath Ram was reported to be in extramarital affair with another leader of the party Seema Rai, while former Agriculture Minister Satyanand Jha Batul is currently facing paternity suit at the Jharkhand High Court after he was charged of marrying another leader Soni Singh. Recently, BJP leader Kumar Vinod also landed in a scandal after a married lady alleged that she was being sexually exploited since a year in lieu of getting her a job.

‘The recent incidents have brought a bad name to the women leaders and our confidence level has definitely shattered.  It has really become tough for us to convince our family and friends. Our family members are also worried for us after such incidents,’ said a female leader of the BJP.

The position of women leaders at the junior level in the political parties is even worst and they have to go through acute mental trauma added another women leader. Most of them however, blame it on their female counterparts for getting themselves exploited by any leader.

“It is a result of being greedy and over-ambitious in their career. The senior leaders take advantage of it and exploit them. If women will not allow her for being exploited, no one can exploit her,” said president of State Women Congress Abha Sinha. According to Sinha, the whole system has been groomed in such a way that such leaders get away easily using their power and influence.

AJSU leader Barsa Gaadi also believes that the women leaders are equally responsible for getting exploited by their seniors as one cannot clap by a single hand. “Once, the situation gets out of their control, they start making hue and cry. Before that they never complain about it,” she added.
