Security forces hunt for rebels behind Gumla ambush

The Chainpur block of Gumla has turned into a police stronghold following the recent Naxal ambush here on Thursday. Jharkhand DGP Rajiv Kumar and several senior police officials are recently camping in the region after the extremist attack.

Combing operations are going on in full swing in and around Chainpur right after the attack. ASP (Operations) Sanjay Kumar and Gumla SDPO Indrajit Mahtha are looking after the combing operations in the region.

“We are conducting search operations in the nearby areas to track down the extremists involved in the attack. Ample amount of security forces have been deployed for this. Every available resource of State police is being put to full use in this operation,” said Gumla SP Rakesh Bansal.

Police personnel are probing the nearby jungles of Chainpur for rebels that might be hiding there after the assault.

The police personnel are not discouraged though, despite the brutal assault, as claimed by the district police officials.

“The Naxalites attacked public servants from behind when they were on their way to help the public. They ambushed us in a crowded marketplace and hid among common people, dressed as innocent villagers. We still have a high morale as they have backstabbed us,” stated Gumla SDPO Indrajit Mahtha.

He further added, “As far as the involved rebels are concerned, to us, they are not different from any ordinary miscreants. We are tracking them and will nab them soon, like any other criminal. Their cowardice will be aptly answered.”

Five police personnel died in this surprise attack and several others were injured in the fire-fight that followed.

The dead bodies of the fallen policemen have already been sent to their native places. Also, the injured police personnel were sent to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for further medical attention.
