The second batch of Indian Institute of Management, Ranchi, (IIM-R), of Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGEXP), who are to receive their degrees in the convocation ceremony on April 11 love to call themselves as ‘Jack of all trades’.
The course, which was designed exclusively for working professionals, is said to have expanded the knowledge horizon of 58 candidates here including 55 men and three women.
“After working in the Government sector for around eight years, I was unable to acquire management skills. This 18 months course proved to be a blessing and an added advantage to my resume. Now, I can communicate easily with the people of corporate as well as the Government fraternity. Infact, reputed companies are offering a handsome salary package jobs,” Pradeep Hazari, the class representative of this batch said. Presently, Hazari is a manager in a Government of India (GOI) organisation. A senior public health sector employee Rajan Kumar, who has a Master in Business Administration (Personal Management) said, “Gaining a PGEXP certificate from IIM matters indeed. It not only adds weightage to our curriculum vitae but also helps us in being selected in the deputation posts of Government.”
Supporting Kumar, SN Gupta working as manager (legal) at GOI’s housing and urban development corporation limited said, “This course filled the blanks of my career. It taught me the analytical approaches of a problem solving. One needs to understand finance, accountability, production and human psychology in a senior position at the Government or private sector.”
Interestingly, majority of this course’s first batch students had planned to switch over to corporate world as future career option after getting their degrees which is not exactly the same this time. “In Army, most of the officers retire early unlike senior Central Government officers. So, it is important to know the pros and cons of business management comprising social entrepreneurship and human resource helpful as a second career option,” a Colonel posted at Ranchi who too was a part of this course on the condition of anonymity said.
