One of the most singled out scriptwriters in B-Town for crime genre movies, Zeishan Quadri who clinched several awards and critics’ acclaims for his debut film, Gangs of Wasseypur, co-written with renowned filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap, spoke to The Pioneer about his upcoming projects, Jharkhand film policy, film genres etc. Quadri is in Ranchi to attend the India Today Conclave to present his views about Jharkhand Culture and prospect of the State. Excerpts:
Tell us about your upcoming projectIJ
At present several projects are in pipeline. I am scripting two movies, it will be too early to reveal about it. My focus is on ‘Gangs of Wasseypur 1.5’, which is on floor and after the post production work is completed, it will hit the theaters soon nationwide. I am also working on a project, based on a true incident. The story revolves around a life of an IAS officer.
Are you planning to shift your genreIJ Jharkhand specific script in mind, if anyIJ
Yes, for a change, I am penning down a love story, based on the backdrop of 90’s. However, I love scripting crime based stories. As a writer, you need to explore different genres. As far as my State is concerned, it is my dream to make films based on Jharkhand. I will produce a movie based on status of sports, education of girls in the state. I have already started my research work and within a year, most probably from September 2017, the team will start working on a story idea based on Jharkhand.
You have put up several caps as a writer, producer, director and actorIJ Which role interests you the mostIJ
Undoubtedly, I enjoy writing. The most appealing part in the movies is its dialogues. A strong script leaves a mark on audiences mind. It has the power to connect the audiences both emotionally and visually. Writing is the backbone of the film. A writer needs to relate to the subject and it is a really challenging task. I still prefer writing on paper rather using my Mac Book.
Are you satisfied with the new film policy drafted out by the State GovernmentIJ
There are several loopholes in the film policy. As a creative person, I am not very much satisfied with the present film policy. Mere giving subsidy to the film makers will not fulfill the main aim of drafting out a film policy. The government needs to wake up and give opportunity to the local artists including all creative people who have brought laurels to state and are associated with Bollywood in some or the other way. Frankly speaking, the state government never took my opinion on the film policy.
