PNS

To commemorate the birth anniversary of the greatest Indian mathematician Dr Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan several Bokaro schools observed Growing Aptitude in Numerical Innovations and Training (GANIT) week which was concluded on Tuesday.

To mark the 128 birth anniversary of the great mathematician an origami contest was organised in the Chinmaya Vidyalaya. Students of classes II to XI participated in this contest. They made different shapes out of paper, designing of front cover of mathematics books by applying different concepts of mathematics and presented their mathematical temperament and innovation. The students made crab, sweet box, tie, dog, peacock, lantern, houses and proved that a simple thing like a paper could be reshaped into many different useful things just by simple implementation of mathematical theorems.

Addressing the students on this occasion Dr. Ashok Singh, Principal, Chinmaya Vidyalaya said, “There is a need to develop a sense of respect for our Indian mathematicians who have contributed a lot to the global mathematics arena. There is great depth in this subject and is one of the most interesting subjects. Students have a fear for this subject due to faulty and uninteresting teaching technique. There is a dearth of new teaching techniques and methodology.”

Various activities including Mathematics Relay Race, Solving Mathematical Puzzles such as Rubik’s cube and creating magic squares, Quiz Competition and Origami Competition were organised during the week which was concluded at DPS .

Under Dr. Radhakrishnan Sahodaya School Complex, Inter-school competitions were organised including  Book Cover Designing Competition for Class VI to VIII in which Anand Prakash of DAV Public School stood first, Tejaswani of DPS, Bokaro came second and Pankaj Kumar of GGPS stood third and in Mathematical Puzzle Solving Competition for Class IX to XII Saurabh Mukherjee of Crescent Public School and Ashish Kirti Singh of GGPS secured the first position, while Ratan Kumar of DAV ranked second in the competition. In the Inter-House Mathematics quiz competition Raavi House got the first position, Sutlej House got the second position and Ganga House got the third in the Middle Group. In the senior category, Sutlej got the first postion, Jhelum got the second while the third position was bagged by Chenab, school authority informed.

Dr. Hemlata S. Mohan, Director and Principal, DPS, Bokaro said that such events will help in reducing fear of Mathematics among the student and make its study more interesting. She also urged more students to participate in such events.
