In an attempt to achieve the goal of open defecation free (ODF) State by 2018 as per the national plan of action, the Department of Water and Sanitation after covering 30 per cent population (approximately 75 lakh people and 10 lakh families) under water pipeline project, is gearing up to expand the scheme to cover up approximately 10 lakh households more by end of financial year 2017-18.

“In the wake of achieving the target of ODF, so far, some extra connections have been also given to the public. By March 2020, the department will be able to cover up approximately 50 per cent population under the water pipeline project,” said Principal Secretary, Department of Water and Sanitation, AP Singh.

However considering the geographical conditions, the problem of water scarcity may hinder the ambitious scheme of ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’ (SBM). Denying the fact, Singh further added that sanitation and water connectivity have been always misunderstood. Singh pointing out on various technological developments being adopted by the department to tackle the water crisis issue even in the remotest areas. He said that the loose pit toilet concept will prove to be a boon in decreasing  the utilization of water in sufficient amount in toilets.

“Considering the geographical feature, the department is building toilets based on the loose pit design. The most important feature of this loose pit technique is that all the pit toilets penetrates liquid into the ground and serves as device which stores the residue. Further, much treatment is also not required for its maintenance, however, use of acids must be avoided as microbes are the prime agents that work as cleansers,” said, Singh.

In addition, the department is also ensuring creation of 3 to 5 feet water storage tanks near toilets in rural pockets for stocking up water for later consumption. Singh also said that requirement of 60 percent water in different areas can be covered through different river sources while 30 per cent requirement can get fulfilled through groundwater. Notably, the Minister, Drinking water and Sanitation Department, Chandra Prakash Choudhary had claimed earlier that only by 2022, the rural populace would get water through pipeline facility.
