National Cadet Corps is meant to safeguard the nation but National Service Scheme (NSS) develops individual personality with social work,” proudly echoed Ranchi University (RU) NSS Coordinator Prakash Kumar Jha referring particularly for Jhuria village located at lohardaga district wherein the local college (BS College) NSS volunteer’s efforts has bounded the state government to give this rural place a renovated look.
As a regular schedule to adopt a slum-dwelled area for a period of three years in order to bring some development with regard to education, environment, health and disaster management, NSS volunteers conduct awareness programmes in the villages adopted by them. But, rarely a village undertaken by NSS is fortunate to grab the administration’s concern.
Jhuria was adopted in 2010 by NSS volunteers and during this tenure government’s support to make 500 meters approach road and construct a Panchayat Bhawan due to 100 students presence as NSS volunteers here has brought developing in process scene at this village which was earlier a marginalized zone.
“Our students are now looking forward to disseminate basic education among the village children so that the message of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan can reach out to its target audience,” said PK Jha. As social awareness, the volunteers are also planning to offer saplings to the localites for plantation at this village wherein the villagers too are involved with them for the upliftment of their village.
Similar to Jhuria, RU has bagged an achievement at Asantalia village located at Chakradharpur block at West Singhbhum district from 2004 to 2007 where impressed by the activities of NSS, state government established its sub-division office.
Narrating the pathetic condition of Asantalia, Jha said that this village situated at 10 kilometers away from the block would get water-logged during monsoon.
RU NSS is also handling technical hurdles at the slums on encroached land within the state capital. Jha said, “It becomes difficult for us to work on water and sanitation projects in such villages. The government should provide rehabilitation like Indira Awaas Yojana to these deprived people so that we they can get the facilities they actually deserve.”
It is to be noted, the RU has recently adopted the largest slum including a population of around 25,000 at the Mausibari area near Jagannath temple at Dhurwa by the NSS volunteers of JN College. Programme Officer of NSS at JN College informed that the rural arena is known as the darkest point in the name of development despite being located near Project Building and Secretariat, the two prominent State Government offices.
