In the Rolling Mill Operating Committee (RMOC) meeting held from 11-12 January, experts from Indian steel industries, after sharing their experiences on one platform, have made very important technical recommendations to improve productivity in the near future. Tata Steel Global Wires India (TSGLW) has implemented KVX system to reduce fuel consumption in the reheating furnace of its plant. Notably all other steel plants decided to try a similar system in their mills for reduction in specific fuel consumption. Truly this will be an important step in improving the condition and direction of sustainability and environment.
The problem of cobble during rolling is the most important problem in rolling mill operations which has a very adverse effect on mill productivity, mill utilization and specific fuel consumption. During the meeting, many suggestions were given to solve the problem of cobble. To overcome the problem of cobble, Bokaro Steel Plant uses brass liners below the load cells which helps in reducing cobble. Other steel plants also agreed to use a similar system. Similarly, distance sensors are used to detect coil off in Jindal Group's JSW, Dolvi plants, other plants also agreed to install this system at their sites. Similarly, it was agreed to improve productivity by effectively implementing the suggestions of maintenance of height of laminar cooling headers, installation of bottom pyrometer and shift-wise checking of all HSM headers by all the plants.
To improve packaging, it was suggested to upgrade the existing strapping machine. It was also decided in the meeting that the coilers of Hot Strip Mill of Bokaro Steel Plant will be upgraded with latest grade of strapping and wooden runners of coil dispatch can be replaced with reusable PV roll cradles.
