Denizens of Ranchi will not have to endure filth-strewn lakes and dark alleys this festive season, guaranteed Ranchi Municipal Corporation functionaries.

To reinforce their claims, Mayor Asha lakra, Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Vijaywargiya and Town Commissioner Prashant Kumar, accompanied by around 200 NCC cadets, gathered to conduct a cleaning drive at Kanke Dam on Friday morning.

“We began with cleaning Ranchi lake some time back. This cleanliness drive at Kanke Dam is under the campaign to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. We wish to clean every water body in Ranchi before the festive season,” stated Asha lakra.

Deputy Mayor Sanjeev Vijaywargiya said, “This campaign at Kanke Dam will go on for three days to come. The drive will be extended to other water bodies in Ranchi too, and will go on till Chhath Puja. We are aiming to clean the dams and lakes within the city limits before this festival of sun worship arrives. This is in consideration of the complaints we receive from devotees about unclean water bodies during festivals.”

Under the same campaign, ward councillors conducted cleanliness drives at their respective wards on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

“Similar drives have been conducted in future and we will continue them in the coming future. As for preparations regarding the oncoming festive season, a separate cleanliness drive will be conducted by all 55 ward councillors in their wards specially to clean the city before Durga Puja,” informed ward-28 Ward Councillor Ashok Kumar Baraik.

As planned earlier, RMC was planning to cover the city in bright white light of lED street lights by putting them in place of the conventional sodium vapour lamps before Durga Puja.

Major streets in Ranchi have already been equipped with the improved street lamps. Ward councillors were to put up the same lamp post in lanes and alleys of their wards within the stipulated time frame.

“The work of putting up lED street lamps is almost complete, most of the ward councillors have already covered majority of area in their wards. There barely are four to five wards left which are yet to complete the target,” said the Mayor.

Ward Councillor Ashok Kumar Baraik said, “I have received the lED lamps to be put in my ward. The work of installing them is to begin from today. The target of upgrading the street lamps will definitely be completed by Durga Puja.”
