Registering marriages becomes compulsory in State

Appointment for registration of marriage can soon be done online through new software, which will be rolled out by the State Revenue, Registration and Land Reforms department within a week.

Once the software is rolled out the Jharkhand Compulsory Registration Act, which came to existence in 2018, will officially be implemented across the State.

Inspector General, registration, A Muthukumar said, “The software has been prepared by National Informatics Centre (NIC). The module is ready and we have already sent a letter to the NIC to roll out the software.”

Under the Act, all the marriages which were performed after the notification of the Act have to be mandatorily registered. The registration of marriage of those who got married before the Act came into existence is kept optional.

“The software was developed to make the process of registration easy. If we are making something mandatory then we should also provide door to door service for the same,” Muthukumar said.

At present, to get a marriage registered one has to go to the registrar's office situated in district headquarters for first taking an appointment and then to get the registration done.

However, once the software is rolled out, appointment for all the marriages which have to be registered under Compulsory marriage registration act can be taken online along with filing of all documents.

Under the new Act, the marriage registration in urban areas has to be done by the body which registers and issues birth and death certificates like municipal corporation or councils while in the rural areas the registration is to be done by Mukhiya, Sarpanch, Panchayat Sevak or any other officer notified by the state government.

Once the appointment procedure is completed an ID number will be generated and the couple will just have to visit either the block headquarter in rural areas or municipal office in urban area to get their marriage registered. Any discrepancies in the form will also be notified to the applicant online.
