Ranchi among favourites for IVF

Changing life style and food habits have resulted in the decline of fertility. However, technology in the form of In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) has come to the rescue of those who are battling with the problem. Interestingly, what has come to the rescue of people now needs to be rescued.

According to Ranchi based expert of IVF, Dr Jayashree Bhattacharya, time has come for the Government to intervene, encourage and provide assistance to the technology, which illuminates millions of  faces.

Dr Bhattacharya, Director, A.H.I.V.F said, “In-Vitro fertilisation needs support from the Government as there are very few institutions catering to this specific need which is increasing with time.”

The gift of modern science, IVF is neither taught as a specialised subject nor there do exist a training facility to train Gynaecologists to provide treatment to couples in need.

Dearth of trained faculties and limited sources of supply is also an impediment to the form of diagnosis. Several Gynaecologists come to Ranchi to receive hands-on training on IVF at A.H.I.V.F.

Although, the revenue contribution to the city from this form of medical tourism is low it could increase manifold with the Government’s intervention.

Ranchi is a centre were people from different parts of the Eastern Region come for treatment.

“Even prestigious medical colleges in Patna and Ranchi do not run specialised courses in IVF,” said Dr Bhattacharya adding “Ranchi University had given approval to run the course long time back but the proposal was put on back burner for lack of infrastructure and funds.”

Being a costly affair and due to low success rate, IVF has failed to take firm roots in Ranchi as people who come for treatment belong to good income group and the technology is yet to become affordable for lower income group.

“Success rate of such treatment is around 40 percent but that is the only thing we can improve upon, cost will be high because of the specialised kind of diagnosis used,” she said.
