Rains in Palamu trump average record mark

PNS

Palamu breaks its own record of average rainfall in July. Over the last five decades here, the average rainfall in Palamu has been 344 mm. DC Palamu K Srinivasan also confirms this fact.

This average rain fall record of July in this district stands broken only on July 18. There are thirteen more days left in this month. The district has recorded rain fall in excess of its own average figure of  344 mm.

On July 15/16 it had recorded 141 mm of rain fall alone. Srinivasan said this is the highest so far. By July 16 Palamu's rain fall record was 305 mm added Srinivasan. Just short of 39 mm to reach its average figure of 344 mm.

Sources said two days rains coming on July 17 and July 18 went beyond this 39 mm.

Sources said the rain fall recorded in these two days is around 58 mm. This 58 mm added to 305 mm takes it to 363 mm by July 18 the highest rain fall so far in July in Palamu exceeding average rain fall of 344 mm.

Sources said Palamu witnesses longer dry spell too. Here farmers want dry spell now. Hefty rains do not augur well for agriculture. Ram Pukar Singh, who is a farmer, said, “Heavy rains do not bring in heavy harvest.” A rain in time and that too a

modest one is fit for Palamu, he added.

So much of rain now in Palamu, but its retention is a far cry here. The rain water is going down the river Koyal which has its confluence with Bihar's Sone river.

The Koyal river meets Ouranga river in Kechki and then all these waters come down to Koyal.

Sources said rain water management leaves much to be desired. The rain water here runs off as its percolation tendency is poor.

Replying to a question whether too much of rains a good sign for harvesting, thecrowd of farmers firmly said, “No. Not at all. Modest rain  helps us the most. This is the rain of misery.”
