No guessing about number of tigers in the Palamu Tiger Reserve. Sources said it has five tigers now in this tiger reserve.Sources further said the Wild life Institute of India, Dehradun, has confirmed at least four tigers. About the fifth one there is a strong positive indicator. The PTR’s DFO Core Premjit Anand has confirmed this saying the Wild life Institute of India has established presence of four tigers and for one the fifth one there is every hope of its being here too he added.
The DFO core refused to give the locations or territory of these tigers saying it will be dangerous to them. A tiger sets up its own territory and tries to have its prey right within it. In absence of prey it can trudge up to 30 km also. However, it is a sad reflection that when this tiger reserve was set up in the early seventies there were 22 tigers including the cubs. In all these 40 years plus the number has so dwindled down to five.
